D&R Canal Watch, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting, maintaining, and promoting the Delaware and Raritan Canal. This policy explains what information we collect through canalwatch.org, why we collect it, and what we do with it.
We are a small volunteer organization. We collect only what we need to respond to you, process memberships and donations, and organize events.

Information We Collect
We collect personal information only when you choose to give it to us through one of the forms on our website.
When you contact us Our contact form collects your name, email address, phone number, and the message you write.
When you join or renew a membership Our membership form collects your name, email address, phone number, mailing address, and your payment details.
When you make a donation Our donation form collects your name, email address, phone number, mailing address, and your payment details.
When you volunteer Our volunteer form collects your name, email address, phone number, and any comments you provide.
We do not require you to create an account, and we do not collect information about you when you simply browse the site.
Payment Information
Donations and membership payments are processed by PayPal. When you pay, your card or bank details go directly to PayPal. We never see or store your full card number.
We receive a confirmation from PayPal that includes your name, email address, the amount, and a transaction reference, which we keep as our record of your gift.

How We Use Your Information
We use the information you give us to:
- Reply to your questions and messages
- Process and acknowledge your membership or donation
- Send you a receipt for your records and for tax purposes

- Maintain our records as a nonprofit organization

What We Do Not Do
We do not sell your information. We have never sold or rented donor, member, or contact information, and we will not.
We do not share your information with other organizations for their own use.
We do not run advertising trackers on this site.
Who We Share Information With
We share information only where it is necessary to operate:
- PayPal, to process your payment
- Our website host, which stores the site and its database
- Our email provider, to deliver messages and receipts
We may also disclose information if we are legally required to do so.

Our website uses cookies only where they are necessary for the site to function, such as remembering form progress. We do not use advertising or profiling cookies.
If you leave a comment or log in as an administrator, WordPress may set cookies to remember your details.
Analytics
We do not currently use website analytics. We do not track individual visitors.
How Long We Keep Your Information
Contact and volunteer messages are kept for up to two years, then deleted.
Membership and donation records are kept for seven years, as required for nonprofit financial recordkeeping and tax reporting.
Newsletter subscriptions are kept until you ask to be removed.
Your Rights
You may ask us at any time to:
- Tell you what information we hold about you
- Correct information that is wrong
- Delete your information, where we are not required to keep it for financial or legal reasons
- Stop sending you our newsletter or other mailings
Write to us at the mailing address above and we will respond within a reasonable time.
Children
This website is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe a child has given us information, contact us and we will delete it.
Security
We take reasonable steps to protect the information we hold, including secure payment processing through PayPal and restricted access to our website administration.
No website can guarantee perfect security, but we do not store payment card numbers, which removes the most sensitive category of data from our systems entirely.
